Menopause is a midlife reproductive aging milestone. Menopause is characterized by a loss in estrogen, which is the primary female sex hormone. Estrogen is responsible for many processes within the female body. Estrogen helps with heart, bone, and brain health, and it also plays a role in mental health and sexual health. When females lose estrogen during menopause, they can experience symptoms that include hot flashes, mood swings, and challenges with memory and sexual health. It’s important during menopause, to share the symptoms you are experiencing with your doctor and also to attend appointments regularly for assessment of your heart and bone health. It is important to understand what menopause is, as many of the symptoms can affect quality of life. Women living with HIV may experience menopause differently than women without HIV. Attend HOCC* this September to learn more about menopause so you can help yourself and others!
